Lottery Process

We run our enrollment lottery on March 1. You will notified of the lottery results by email and phone call. If selected, you have 48 hours to accept or decline your seat. If you do not reply within 48 hours, your seat will be given to the next child on the waiting list and your child will be moved to the bottom of the waiting list.

If your child is selected for enrollment via lottery and you accept the seat, you must complete the enrollment paperwork within 10 days to secure your seat.

If your child was not selected for enrollment after the lottery, their name has been placed on a waiting list in the order in which they were pulled during the lottery. Keep an eye on your email! The waiting list should move all the time as folks make enrollment decisions.

Applications received between March 1 and the start of the school year will be added to the end of the lottery-generated waiting list in the order in which they are received.

Lottery FAQ

Why do you use Lotterease?

Lotterease Seal

When you see the Seal on a school website, you can be confident that your application will be included in the school lottery in a fair and transparent way. That is because  Lotterease is an independent automated lottery system that the school uses to manage their lottery and waitlist. Since Lotterease is an independent system, the school  staff do not have the ability to manipulate or adjust the lottery outcome. They must work within the requirements of the system. In addition, all activity that takes place with your application is tracked in a history log that you can view at any time by logging into the parent portal. If the school you want your child to attend displays the Lotterease Seal of Transparency and Fairness, you can rest assured that you child will get their fair chance to attend the school.

I’m having trouble figuring out how to set up an account in Lotterease. How do I do it?

Who gets preference in the lottery?

In accordance with school policy and § 115C-218.45, the following groups receive preference in the lottery: (1) children of full time staff and board members, (2) siblings of currently enrolled students who were admitted to the charter school in a previous year, (3) siblings of students who have completed the highest grade level offered by that school and who were enrolled in at least four grade levels offered by The Experiential School of Greensboro, and (4) students who were enrolled in the school within the two previous school years but left the school (i) to participate in an academic study abroad program or a competitive admission residential program or (ii) because of the vocational opportunities of the student’s parent.

Preference means that children entered into the lottery within these groups run through the lottery first, before the general population of applicants.

What about siblings entering the lottery together? If one gets in, do the others automatically get in?

If siblings apply for admission to The Experiential School of Greensboro all in the same year, the family surname (or a representative name) can be entered into the lottery to represent all of the siblings applying at the same time. If that surname of the siblings is selected, then all of the siblings are admitted to the extent that space is available and does not exceed the grade level capacity. If there is not a seat available for the sibling, that sibling will be placed at the top of their grade level waiting list.

If multiple birth siblings apply for admission, one surname can be entered into the lottery to represent all of the multiple birth siblings applying at the same time. If that surname of the multiple birth siblings is selected, then all of the multiple birth siblings would be admitted to the extent that space is available and does not exceed the grade level capacity. If there is not a seat available for the sibling, that sibling will be placed at the top of their grade level waiting list.

If the lottery runs and a set of siblings are not selected, they still benefit from surname preference. When one child is selected off the waiting lists and the parent accepts their seat, the remaining siblings will rise to the top of their respective waiting lists.

What happens if I get accepted in the lottery or off the waiting list?

You will be notified that your child’s name has been accepted by an email from Lotterease. You will need to follow the instructions in the email to accept the seat. You will have 48 hours to accept the seat.

What happens if I miss the 48 hour window to accept the seat?

If you miss the window, the Lotterease system will automatically move your child to the bottom of the grade level waiting list.

I’ve accepted the seat! Now what?

You will receive another email from Lotterease with the link to the enrollment form. You will need to complete this form within 10 days or your seat may be given to the next child on the waiting list. We can not put your child on a roster until you have finalized admission by completing this form. See the Enrollment page for more information about other documents you’ll need to provide.

The lottery already ran? Can I still apply?

Applications received between March 1 and the start of the school year will be added to the end of the lottery-generated waiting list in the order in which they are received.

When does enrollment close for the year?

For 2019-2020, enrollment will remain open until the end of the 20 days of the school year up to the student maximum as authorized by the charter agreement. For 2018-2019, enrollment is closed.
